Following the absolute insanity of Golden State Warriors shooting guard Klay Thompson's 52-point night (and record 37-point) quarter in Friday's blowout win over the Sacramento Kings, Warriors executive assistant and NBA legend Jerry West couldn't get over what he had witnessed.
"I flew back (to his home in Los Angeles) after the game, and honestly, I couldn't go to sleep," West said on Saturday, via Carl Steward of the San Jose Mercury News. "I was replaying in my own mind what I had just witnessed. It was incredible to watch. It's something no one's watched, to be honest with you. The people that were fortunate to be there saw something that's probably not going to happen for a long, long time if it ever happens again."
Thompson's dazzling 13-for-13 display (with 9-for-9 shooting beyond the arc) in the 3rd quarter gave fans, players, and executives alike much more than their money's worth in West's eyes.
"Sometimes people just come to a game because it's fun, but last night they got an extra amount of fun and their adrenalin was probably running as hard those players were," he said. "The funniest thing of all was when he made that last one in the corner, and Steph just grabbed his head. He was probably saying to himself, 'I can't believe this.' He's usually the one doing it."
And what about those Kevin Love-for-Klay Thompson trade rumblings from this past offseason?
"They would have had one less employee if that would have happened," he said. "When you get a backcourt like that, you just can't make changes. I think everybody who looked at that from a basketball perspective knew that, at the end of the day, it wasn't the right thing for us to do. To have a backcourt like that, it's just a beautiful thing."
