The Lakeshow came to Oracle Arena on Wednesday night, and may never want to return. The Warriors lived up to the hype in their season opener, beating the Lakers 125-94.
The Warriors had a phenomenal night—everyone played well, but there was one player who stood out. Klay Thompson received a standing ovation when he left the court after three quarters, having already scored a career-high 38 points. Maybe Klay was trying to prove something to his father—former NBA player Mychal Thompson—who was working on the Lakers’ radio broadcast team. If that was the case, mission accomplished.
Andre Iguodala expressed his fondness for Thompson during a postgame interview, raving about the Warriors guard: “Klay learned something new. Klay is my favorite player in the league so I’m passing him the ball every time and he knows it…I just love playing with these guys, especially Klay.”
Although Thompson dominated the court with his shooting, this game was far from a one-man show. Offseason pickup Toney Douglas added 13 points and David Lee contributed with 24 points, eight rebounds and five assists. Stephen Curry had 10 points and six assists in the win.
Golden State led for almost the entire game. They were up by 19 at the half and as much as 35 early in the fourth. Every healthy Warrior played in the season opener, and they gave the fans exactly what they wanted.
Unfortunately, Harrison Barnes—although suited up—didn’t play Wednesday night. Barnes won’t be playing for the Warriors first two games as he recovers from a foot injury, but Golden State is hopeful that Barnes will be fully healthy and ready for Saturday’s home game against the Sacramento Kings. The Warriors were able to play extremely well without Barnes, and once he returns the sky is the limit for this talented squad.
The Warriors started their season by proving that they can contend for the championship this season, and they’ll have another chance to show it Thursday night in Los Angeles against the LA Clippers.
