In a statement this morning, Golden State Warriors CEO formally announced that the Warriors are officially moving to San Francisco in 2017. After 6 months of planning, the Warriors will relocate from their dreary location to a new one just a few hundred yards down The Embarcadero from AT&T Park (pictured above).
The new stadium will take up Piers 30 and 32 which are currently used for overflow parking for the Giants. The cost of the stadium will be around half a billion dollars. Owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber say they already have the money to make the stadium a reality, so financing is not an issue.
This move is long overdue, the Warriors have been a struggling franchise for years and desperately need a change. In this new prime time location, the Warriors are sure to bring in way more season ticket holders.
Additionally, San Francisco businesses will thrive from this move. There are hundreds of bars and restaurants in the SOMA area that will benefit from this move because Warriors fans will now have the option of dining out after a game instead of rushing to their cars and hurrying out of Oakland.
This is a smart move by the Warriors, and one that will help rejuvenate a franchise that needs a facelift.
