The official 2013-2014 NBA schedule won’t be released until August 6th, but there are already rumors of a Warriors-Clippers matchup in Oakland scheduled for Christmas day. Chris Paul and the Clippers will be looking for revenge after dropping three of four to Stephen Curry and the Warriors last season, and the game would no doubt be a highlight of what’s become the NBA’s marquee showcase.
The rumor broke yesterday morning when a Canadian reporter for Sheridan Hoops named Brett Poirier tweeted about the supposed schedule leak. It’s unclear where Poirier’s information is coming from, or if he can be considered a reliable source, but not long after his tweet, Dan Woike of the reputable Orange County Register made a similar report.
No one can deny the appeal of a Clips-Warriors matchup as part of the NBA’s Christmas schedule. The Clippers and the Warriors have established one of the Western Conference’s most entertaining rivalries over the past two seasons, and a Christmas rematch makes perfect sense for both teams.
Golden State played without Andrew Bogut during all four of their matchups against the Clippers last season. With a healthy Bogut and the addition of Andre Iguodala, Los Angeles will know better than to take the Warriors lightly. If the game is indeed happening in Oakland, Golden State will almost certainly be favored – in last years’ matchups at Oracle, Stephen Curry torched the Clippers from beyond the arc, shooting a combined 12-16 from three-point range. Golden State won the first matchup by 21 and the second by seven, and they’ll be looking to reuse that formula next time the Clips come to town.
We won’t know until the 6th whether or not this matchup is indeed part of the schedule, but this showdown would be a fantastic addition to the NBA’s Christmas schedule.
