The Golden State Warriors were just as successful off the court this summer as they were on the court during the season, but we still learned some things about the defending champs along the way. Here are three things we learned about the Warriors in free agency:
Draymond Green is a team player
Green was really Golden State's only wild card of the offseason as everyone was wondering what would happen to the retricted free agent. The Warriors were adamant about wanting to re-sign Green, but the third-year man could've waited until he got a max offer sheet from another team. While Golden State would've matched that offer to keep the versatile Green on the roster, he signed for less than the max soon after free agency, leaving money on the table to help the Warriors sign more free agents down the road.
Addition by subtraction?
One of the reasons why the Warriors were able to pay Green his money was because of their trade with the Celtics, sending David Lee to Boston. Lee accepted a largely diminished role on the team to help them win a title, and while it worked, he was starting to become unhappy. Unloading him now doesn't risk team chemistry dropping next season during their quest for a repeat.
The pieces are in place
Even as other Western Conference contenders (Spurs, Clippers) loaded up with more talent, Golden State stayed put with their current roster. They could've added another veteran free agent (David West?) to help them keep up in this arms race, but they're convinced the same young group is capable of running through the league again in 2015-16.
