To Gioia’s point, Georgia Tech’s money (or lack thereof) talks — a lot. There’s a reason why this part of the series has been saved for last: the financial situation at the Edge defines and restricts so much of what Tech can do both on and off the field. Tech’s finances sit at the confluence of all of the factors we’ve discussed before; in many ways the athletic department’s balance sheets reflect the cumulative effect of all of these historic shifts in demographics, institutional priorities, and culture.
