STATESBORO – Shai Werts threw for 99 yards and a touchdown and rushed for another 85 markers and two scores to lead Georgia Southern to a 48-13 Sun Belt Conference football win over South Alabama Saturday afternoon in Allen E. Paulson Stadium.
Key Moment: After leading 17-6 at halftime, the Eagles (4-1, 2-0) got the ball to start the second half and promptly went 75 yards in 4:29, all on the ground. Wesley Fields capped the eight-play drive with a 27-yard touchdown run down the left sideline. South Alabama (1-5, 1-2) drove to the GS 39-yard line on its ensuing possession but turned it over on downs when Sean Freeman broke up an Evan Orth pass.
