Georgia is turning to one of its own to try to take its football program to the next level.
Kirby Smart, a former Georgia safety who was on staff with the Bulldogs early in his coaching career, is set to be hired as the new head football coach, according to the Atlanta-Journal Constitution.
The national championship-winning Alabama defensive coordinator will be announced as soon as Sunday or Monday “barring a last minute snag,” according to the report.
Georgia officials reached by the Athens Banner-Herald late Tuesday night could not confirm that.
Athletic director Greg McGarity did not respond to messages.
