Not a typical first-time head coach: Kirby Smart viewed as ‘hitting about on all cylinders’

As a first-time head coach, Tom Herman followed up a national title as Ohio State’s offensive coordinator by guiding Houston last season to a top-10 finish and a 13-1 record capped by a New Year’s Six bowl win over Florida State.

So he knows a little something about how to make a smooth transition from successful assistant coach to getting the ball rolling running his own program like Kirby Smart is trying to do at Georgia.

“Our situations are obviously a little bit different,” Herman said. “I had to go play carnival barker a little bit at UH to try and drum up interest and (put) people’s butt in the seats and all that stuff.
