Loran Smith: Mark Richt and Wally Butts could have carried on quite the conversation about the forward pass

Mark Richt’s next victory means he will have won more games than any coach wearing the Red and Black, except, of course, Vince Dooley, who basked in the winner’s circle 201 times as the Bulldogs head coach.

Wallace “Wally” Butts would have appreciated Richt’s offense, given his predilection for the forward pass, which was as overt as his bent for caustic wit and levity.

In his day, however, Butts’ style of offense was an anathema for the era. Butts would never have identified with the run and shoot, but he thought you could move the offense goalward by passing the football.
