Greg Sankey says going to NFL doesn’t stop players from obtaining graduate degrees

ATHENS, Ga. – SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said Saturday that he doesn’t think an NFL career prevents players from obtaining a graduate degree.

Sankey was asked about the SEC’s current graduate transfer rules while meeting with reporters during halftime of Georgia’s G-Day spring game.

“It doesn’t stop those goals,” Sankey said. “We know all kinds of people who have continued to pursue educational goals. In fact, I think the NFL has programs to facilitate that. There’s opportunities there to fulfill those commitments and kind of representations.”

Sankey, at least in the case of former Georgia defensive back Maurice Smith, placed stipulations on the Bulldogs program that he must complete his master’s degree in public health in two years or else face the risk of being blocked from accepting graduate transfers in the future.
