Supporters of the open records law claim it levels the playing field when competing with out-of-state colleges recruiting the state’s top athletes. However, opponents across the country have blasted the legislation, arguing that no other state establishes different standards for college athletics programs when it comes to public transparency.
Though Georgia’s head coach Kirby Smart says he shouldn’t get credit for the bill’s creation, he was the one who initially presented the idea to lawmakers.

“I was asked what’s the difference in our program and some programs I’ve been at in the past,” Smart told reporters.
