Erk Russell is the tie that forever will bind the Georgia and Georgia Southern football programs. Russell served as Vince Dooley’s defensive coordinator for 17 seasons in Athens before heading to Statesboro as the Eagles’ first coach. What he did there, resurrecting a dormant program and winning three Division I-AA national titles in eight years, can rightly be considered miraculous.
Russell’s last season at Georgia culminated in a national title for the Bulldogs. As you can imagine, Russell remembers that team fondly, as he discusses in the below video from the UGA VAULT.
