Georgetown Hoyas legend Allen Iverson officially earned induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Friday. Iverson delivered an emotional speech, mentioning his time at Georgetown on several occasions, including a moment where he teared up while thanking his former coach, John Thompson, for “saving (his) life.” He also name-checked former Hoya walk-on Dean Berry, who he says taught him his now-legendary crossover.
Iverson becomes the sixth Hoya to enter the Basketball Hall of Fame, following his former coach John Thompson, players Patrick Ewing, Alonzo Mourning, and Dikembe Mutombo, and Elmer Ripley, who coached Georgetown in the 1930s and 1940s.
