Its first-half performance against SMU — 9 points scored and 14 allowed, 182 total yards earned and 222 allowed — could be argued as its best start to a game this season. Despite allowing SMU to score on its opening drive, average 6.5 yards per play (16.7 yards per completion!) and convert six of nine third down attempts, the defense came up with some timely plays to give chances to the offense. The Seminoles actually scored on its opening drive, where DJ Uiagalelei hit a key third down toss to Hykeem Williams before connecting with Ja’Khi Douglas for a 50-yard completion.
