Florida State is petitioning the NCAA to rescind penalties levied against the university due to NIL (Name, Image and Likeness) penalties, a report from Yahoo! Sports revealed on Friday.
The penalties range from fines to limitations on transfer portal communication to scholarship reductions, as well as the school being forced to disassociate from NIL collective Rising Spear and offensive coordinator and offensive line coach Alex Atkins being dealt a three-game suspension to start the 2024 season.
The NCAA’s investigation, made public in January, claimed that “impermissible recruiting contact” occurred between a Florida State booster and a transfer prospect (assumed to be then-Georgia Bulldogs offensive lineman Amarius Mims) and that Atkins facilitated the meeting:
During that contact, the booster encouraged the prospect to enroll at Florida State and offered a name, image and likeness deal as a recruiting inducement.
