Most of the time, schools in the portal need to compete against each other but in the case of former Ole Miss offensive tackle Micah Pettus, Florida State head coach Mike Norvell’s first competitor was his new offensive coordinator, Gus Malzahn.
“They were the first people to call me when my name was entered into the portal,” Micah Pettus described yesterday, “It got in there at about 9 o’clock, at about 9:01, they were both trying to beat each other to the phone.”
Norvell and Malzahn knew that 6-foot-7, 350-pound behemoth offensive linemen with three years of college football experience do not grow on trees.
