TALLAHASSEE — Wide receiver Kermit Whitfield sprinted his way into Florida State folklore as a freshman when he broke off a 100-yard touchdown on a kickoff return in the fourth quarter of the 2014 BCS National Championship game.
Whitfield simply had to use his 4.3 speed and follow his blocks for what proved to be a relatively effortless score. Not one Auburn player on the coverage team could even get close enough to Whitfield to attempt a tackle.
If it seemed easy, that's because FSU made returns look that way for much of the 2013-14 campaign. Whitfield regularly had real-estate to work as the Seminoles fielded the most potent kickoff-return unit in the country.
