The game started off tight with neither team able to maintain a significant advantage. For most of the quarter SMU enjoyed a small two to four point lead. However, FSU ended the quarter on a 7-2 run to take a 21-20 lead going into the second quarter.
The Mustangs started the second quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 26-21 lead. Florida State hit four straight free throws to cut into the lead. Chantae Embry then stepped up for SMU scoring their next nine points (all on triples) to give the Mustangs a 35-28 lead.
