BATON ROUGE, La. — If Saturday’s first half against LSU was any indication, Florida can forget about laying claim to the title of Defensive Back University.
The defensive backs, including All-American candidate Vernon Hargreaves III, were consistently burned as the Tigers built a commanding 28-14 halftime lead.
The biggest blunder came in the closing seconds of the half, when the Gators let LSU quarterback Brandon Harris break containment and loft a deep pass down the middle to Malachi Dupre, who caught the pass against out-of-position safety Marcus Maye. Maye then fell down, allowing Dupre to turn and sprint into the end zone only 15 seconds before halftime for a 50-yard TD play.
