UF basketball gets a 2017 commit from Shai Alexander

Florida landed a basketball commitment from a player north of the border Friday.

Shai Alexander, a 6-foot-3, 165-pound point guard from Hamilton Heights, Ontario, pledged to the Gators for the class of 2017 after visiting this week.

Alexander had also drawn interest from Butler, Vanderbilt, Georgia Tech and Davidson, according to his AAU coach with U Play Canada, Dwayne Washington.

“He’s a true point guard, very long, athletic, excellent shooter,” Washington said. “They measured his wingspan at Florida at 6-10 ½ with a 32-inch vertical leap. He’s a very unselfish kid and a good leader.”

This past summer, Alexander helped lead U Play Canada’s under-17 team to a title at the Adidas Uprising Summer Event in Las Vegas.
