GAINESVILLE — University of Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said Tuesday he would not have extended Cam Newbauer’s contract if aware of the former women’s basketball coach’s continued abuse of his players and staff.
A day after a report surfaced detailing Newbauer’s transgressions, Stricklin said he’s ultimately accountable for Newbauer remaining at UF as long as he did despite accusations he belittled players, threw basketballs at them during fits of anger and demeaned Black members of the team because of their appearance.
“We failed in this situation,” Stricklin told a small group of reporters. “Ultimately that’s my responsibility for the culture of this department.
