GAINESVILLE — Behind three sacrifice flies and solid pitching, the No. 1 Florida baseball team opened the 2016 season with a 4-2 win over Florida Gulf Coast in front of 5,778 at McKethan Stadium.
Sophomore catcher Mike Rivera drove in a team-best two runs for the Gators (1-0) on a second-inning sacrifice fly and a fourth-inning home run to left field.
Sophomore designated hitter JJ Schwarz and junior first baseman Peter Alonso added the rest of Florida’s scoring with back-to-back sac flies in the fifth, while Alonso and outfielder Jeremy Vasquez each knocked down two hits.
