JACKSONVILLE – In August 1990, Shane Matthews, Kyle Morris and I made our way to hear our new coach speak in Jacksonville. Steve Spurrier was wrapping up his summer speaking tour in my hometown and it was a short drive from Gainesville.
We enjoyed barbecue, sat with my dad and waited to hear what the “new ball coach” had to say about the upcoming season. If you remember, Spurrier had not named a starting quarterback – meaning Matthews and Morris were competing for the job while also being roommates. At the event, Spurrier made a proclamation that stunned many in the crowd but elevated his greatness as a coach.
