GAINESVILLE — A day after the Florida Gators fell a win shy of the Final Four in men’s basketball, the school turned its attention to a languishing women’s program.
On Monday, UF hired Belmont coach Cameron Newbauer to energize a program with a spotty track record, at best, and little if any fan interest.
Newbauer, 38, will replace Amanda Butler, who was fired March 6 after 10 seasons at her alma mater. The Gators finished 15-16 in Butler’s final season after opening 2016-17 ranked No. 24.
But Newbauer also will have to rise above what could have been.
