Florida State safety Derwin James is undergoing surgery today to repair torn cartilage in his knee, Seminoles coach Jimbo Fisher announced Monday.
James' knee sustained no structural damage, Fisher said, so his ligaments are intact. James could miss 2-6 weeks with the injury, although Fisher said his recovery will depend on what doctors need to do during surgery.
The 6-foot-3, 211-pound James is regarded as one of the most versatile talents in the country. Sports Illustrated ranked him as the No. 10 player nationally in the preseason after he recorded 91 tackles (9 ½ for a loss) with 4 ½ sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries as a true freshman.
