Florida graduate transfer Austin Appleby will start at quarterback for the Gators on Saturday against South Carolina, coach Jim McElwain said Wednesday.
Appleby takes over for starter Luke Del Rio, who injured his shoulder in last Saturday’s 31-10 loss at Arkansas. McElwain said Del Rio would be out for “a while” with the injury.
McElwain also named true freshman Feleipe Franks as Appleby’s backup versus the Gamecocks, beating out fellow true freshman Kyle Trask for the job.
“He’s done a good job all year. Those guys don’t just sit on a scout team or something,” McElwain said on Franks.
