Florida’s homecoming game against LSU this Saturday will include a special tribute to Gainesville native Tom Petty.
The athletic department announced that Saturday’s matchup against the Tigers will include a third-quarter tribute to Petty, who died Monday at age 66 after going into cardiac arrest.
After the third quarter, following the traditional performance of the Florida fight song, the stadium will play Petty’s song “I Won’t Back Down.”
Petty grew up in Gainesville, as did the other four original members of his band the Heartbreakers (bassist Ron Blair, guitarist Mike Campbell, drummer Stan Lynch and keyboardist Benmont Tench), and attended Gainesville High.
