Finney-Smith becoming a leader for Gators

Florida forward Dorian Finney-Smith recalled the first time he played an entire basketball game left-handed.

As an 8-year-old at a Norfolk, Va., area YMCA, Finney-Smith was out to prove a point.

“That's just me challenging myself,” Finney-Smith said during Florida basketball media day Tuesday. “I like challenges. When I was a kid I challenged my brothers and my mom that I could use my left.”

Now a fifth-year senior in college, Finney-Smith is ready to embrace a new challenge for the Gators this season. It's one that goes beyond blowing by a defender with a left-handed dribble, grabbing a rebound in traffic or draining a 3-point shot.
