GAINESVILLE — Shawn Elliott was never the biggest, fastest or strongest guy, but South Carolina's interim head coach always came to play — and win.
Elliott was a standout on an unbeaten Camden (S.C.) state title team that included future NFL stalwarts Vonnie Holliday and Bobby Engram.
Elliott went on to become the first player in Appalachian State history to appear in the NCAA Division I-AA playoffs four separate seasons.
Elliott's determination and winning mentality have rubbed off on the Gamecocks during the three games since his replaced Steve Spurrier, who abruptly retired last month.
