New Florida head coach Jim McElwain finally took over the job on Sunday after the Gators' Birmingham Bowl victory over ECU. Florida is a bit behind in recruiting because of the coaching change, but they've put themselves to make a big splash in the coming months. Here's the latest recruiting rumors in our Sunday roundup:
THREE FIVE-STAR PROSPECTS FAVOR GATORS
The hire of McElwain has created a lot of interest from several of the nation's top prospects, giving Florida the potential to land one of the best classes in the country.
OT Martez Ivey, DE Byron Cowart, and DE CeCe Jefferson - three of the top five recruits in the country, according to 247sports - are all expected to become Gators on National Signing Day, strengthening units that were among Florida's weakest this past season.
JEFF DRISKEL
Driskel has asked for his release from the school, allowing him to contact other schools about a transfer, and he's already contacted Duke as one of his options.
McElwain confirmed that Driskel has asked for his release, saying ultimately Driskel's decision to transfer is his alone.
"I know he’s asked for his release, and that’s up for him," McElwain said Saturday. "We all have choices and I’m not going to hold him hostage, certainly."
OTHER NOTES
Quarterback Lamar Jackson (Boynton Beach, FL), a Louisville commit, is set to visit Florida on January 30th. It will be the last visit he will take before making a decision. Though he has given a verbal to the Cardinals, many think he may switch his commitment to the Gators.
