The Florida Gators are coming off their first loss of the season, at the hands of undefeated LSU. At 6-1, the Gators are by no means out of the race for the College Football Playoff. Here are three reasons why Florida can still make the College Football Playoff.
3. Defense
Will Muschamp had issues with offense at Florida, but he left behind a solid defense for the Gators. Florida has allowed more than 27 points just once this season; in the 35-28 loss to LSU. The Gators have one of the best defenses in the SEC, and rank fourth in yards allowed per game and third in yards per play. There isn't a better corner in the nation than Vernon Hargreaves. In a conference known for its defensive prowess, the Gators have the defense to compete and win games.
2. Weapons On Offense
The loss of QB Will Grier for the season hurts, but UF still has options on offense. Treon Harris was asked to do a lot against LSU, probably too much, but he did show flashes. He is a dual-threat who is best when asked to manage the game. RB Kelvin Taylor didn't get enough touches against LSU, but that likely won't be the case going forward. In a conference loaded with running backs, Taylor is often overlooked. However, he's more than capable of carrying the Florida offense. At WR, Antonio Callaway, Demarcus Robinson and Brandon Powell are all weapons for Harris. While Florida should remain a run-first offense, Jim McElwain does need to ensure these three get the touches they need.
1. Schedule
The Gators have five games left, including contests against FAU, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Those should all be easy wins for Florida. That just leaves a game against Georgia that could decide the SEC East and a non-conference game against Florida State. Those are both teams that Florida can beat and would boost its resume. If UF advances to the SEC Championship game and wins, even if it comes in a revenge game against LSU, the Gators should advance to the College Football Playoff. After all, the committee won't leave out a one-loss SEC championship team. With their weapons on offense and a stout defense, the Gators can run the table and make their College Football Playoff dreams come true.
