Lane Kiffin, Florida Atlantic not using Central Florida’s “national champion” claim as motivation for showdown with No. 16 Knights

BOCA RATON — After a thorough 50-3 dismantling of Akron in last year’s Boca Raton Bowl, Florida Atlantic fans began loudly chanting how they wanted to play Alabama – a program with five National Championships since 2009 – next.

In a way, FAU will play the defending national champions on Friday. But rather than face No. 1 Alabama, who took down Georgia in last year’s College Football Playoff National Championship. Lane Kiffin and the Owls are instead traveling to Orlando to play the self-proclaimed “national champion” No. 16 Central Florida Knights.

“I’m sure Alabama doesn’t think that UCF is the national champs,” deadpanned Kiffin, the second-year Owls coach.
