BOCA RATON — Florida Atlantic junior John Raine is trying to change the general consensus that successful tight ends have to be bigger, bulkier, and slower.
Raine, a rising junior with eight catches for 88 yards in two seasons, is seeing more time with the first-team offense not because he’s surpassing Harrison Bryant on the depth chart, but because Owls head coach Lane Kiffin and offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. like what his size brings to the table.
“I think he’s just really quick,” Kiffin said. “He blocks well in space, which is always an issue because sometimes those guys get big and they’re too big and too long in space sometimes to change direction.
