BOCA RATON — With NBA stars and future Hall of Famers only steps away, Dusty May knew he needed to open his eyes and observe.
Hired in March as FAU’s ninth men’s basketball coach, May spent several days at the Miami Heat’s training camp last month. Dwayne Wade and the Heat practiced at FAU from Sept. 24 to Sept. 29 before beginning the preseason and hoping to make the playoffs for a second straight season.
Though May and the Owls didn’t practice with the Heat, the first-year head coach and his young coaching staff were nonetheless able to take away several key details on how they can turn around a program which hasn’t posted a winning record since the 2010-11 season.
