What first appeared to be a minor concern for Matt Hedges turned out to be a larger issue. The center back has a torn meniscus and could be out for more than a month, the team confirmed Monday.
Zach Loyd, who started alongside Hedges most of last season and has rotated with Walker Zimmerman this year, started Sunday's 2-1 win against Sporting Kansas City and will likely move into a regular starting role.
Loyd said he found out he was starting Sunday when he walked into the locker room ahead of the contest.
"My preparation was exactly the same just because [Saturday] we knew he was in question," Loyd said of Hedges.
