Upon news of Clint Dempsey's retirement Wednesday, an ESPN.com reader poll narrowly proclaimed Nacogdoches' soccer god the greatest player in U.S. national team history.
Which seems about right for a guy who's tied with Landon Donovan with 57 U.S. team goals, and whose 18 World Cup qualifying goals make him even with Jozy Altidore.
Considering that Texas boasts Wichita Falls' own Mia Hamm on the women's side and Dempsey for the men, by the power vested in me by The Dallas Morning News, I hereby proclaim soccer king of Texas sports.
At least until the Friday night lights kick on.
