FC Dallas' season ends after 2-1 loss to Portland in knockout round of MLS playoffs

FRISCO --FC Dallas' 2018 season ended Wednesday with a 2-1 defeat to the Portland Timbers in the knockout round of the playoffs.

It's a disappointing end to a campaign that FCD hoped would represent a bounce back from 2017. The club missed the playoffs last year but in 2016 lifted both the Supporters' Shield and the U.S. Open Cup, with team president Dan Hunt saying a window was open to win more trophies. There now is concern that window both opened and closed in that season.

Diego Valeri put the Timbers ahead in the 22nd minute with a picture-perfect free kick that soared over the FC Dallas wall and tucked into Jesse Gonzalez's near post before the goalkeeper could dive to protect it.
