Devin Butler surprised himself and Brian Kelly by winning the third cornerback job. How that happened dates back to November with public struggles and private maturation.
Brian Kelly was so surprised Devin Butler had won the No. 3 cornerback job that Notre Dame’s head coach blanked on the junior’s name last week before announcing him.
Butler doesn’t take offense.
He’s not quite sure how he got here either, including before the final practice of training camp when Kelly asked Butler to lead the defense in pushups before Friday’s workout. To understand the significance of that job, considering Joe Schmidt led the defense at Culver while Jaylon Smith handled it last week.
