As the dust settles on the 2016/17 season, we look back on how Ronald Koeman guided Everton back into European competition during his maiden season at the helm. After 3-0 and 3-1 away victories over Barnsley and MK Dons and competing in the Dresden Cup, Everton began August with a testimonial, travelling down the East Lancs to Old Trafford to participate in a match to celebrate the career to date of Wayne Rooney. In truth, action on the pitch was relatively tame but the standout performer was Mason Holgate, who, operating in the right of a back three in defence, admirably dealt with the threat of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
