Everton Football Club remembers Tommy Lawton who passed away 20 years ago today, aged 77.
The former England international began his association with the Toffees in December 1936.
After a difficult season, the Club’s board were forced to act and did so when they won the race to sign the forward from Burnley for £6,500.
The 17-year-old had only played 25 times for Burnley but his 16 goals in those games were enough to convince a host of First Division clubs to chase his signature.
Everton won the race, and by doing so, effectively bought a replacement for the ageing Dixie Dean.
