Sam Allardyce is set to remain on Merseyside and miss what would be just his second match as Everton manager on Thursday.
The 63-year-old was only appointed last week but, in an unusual twist, he will not be on the trip to Cyprus for Everton's final Europa League fixture against Apollon Limassol.
Allardyce has a long-standing medical appointment - which he made the club aware of when he was in talks to succeed Ronald Koeman last month - and cannot travel.
It is expected that Craig Shakespeare, one of Everton's new assistant manager, will take Allardyce's place in the dugout and lead the team along with long-serving coach Duncan Ferguson.
