Former Everton star John Heitinga has become a laughing stock in his native Holland after lamenting that he can no longer afford private jets and personal shoppers now that his top-flight football career is over.
The defender, who played 115 matches for Everton as well as 14 for Fulham, retired at the end last season while playing for Ajax, the club where his career began.
The 33-year-old Dutch player told local media: 'When I was still playing football we had a lot more money coming in. Our expenditures were likewise. Now we are trying to adjust.'
Heitinga said that he and his wife Charlotte-Sophie, the sister of Boudewijn Zenden who has played in the Premiership for Chelsea, Liverpool and Sunderland, miss luxury travel especially.
