A well-taken Leighton Baines penalty salvaged a late point against Manchester United as Everton and the visitors played out a 1-1 draw in which both teams were short on quality.
After falling behind when Maarten Stekelenburg lost all his senses and gifted Zlatan Ibrahimovic the opening goal, Everton, led by the excellent Idrissa Gueye, finished the stronger and deserved their equaliser.
Positives
Everton switched to a standard 4-4-2 in the final 20 minutes and played more attractive and creative football in that phase of the game than the previous 70 minutes combined. With the standard 4-2-3-1 system continually misfiring, it may be worth testing this formation from the start as Ronald Koeman tries to find a dependable attacking structure.
