Everton youngster Tom Davies aiming to emulate Wayne Rooney in becoming local Toffees hero

Everton teenager Tom Davies is hoping to capitalise on fellow midfielder's Idrissa Gueye's absence at the African Cup of Nations to show that local lads are still good enough to make it at Goodison Park.

Amidst talk of Ronald Koeman scouring Europe, and having a £19million bid for Manchester United's Morgan Schneiderlin turned down, to try and improve his squad in the January transfer window, 18-year-old Davies - who grew up a couple of miles away from Everton's ground - impressed on only his second Premier League start against Southampton on Monday and set up Romelu Lukaku's final goal in a 3-0 win.
