Everton have confirmed that no permanent damage was caused to a statue of their all-time top goalscorer Dixie Dean after footage emerged of the monument being set alight with a flare.
Toffees fans were left disgusted and upset when footage released online of the incident outside their home ground Goodison Park on Monday.
In a statement responding to the vandalism, the club said: 'Everton is assisting Merseyside Police with enquiries in relation to a flare ignited on the Dixie Dean statue outside Goodison Park.

'We encourage anyone with information relating to this disappointing and disrespectful incident to contact Merseyside Police.
