Aston Villa summer signing Diego Carlos suffers a nightmare Achilles' tendon injury in his second game for the club with Steven Gerrard's new £26m recruit already facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines

Aston Villa have confirmed that £26million summer signing Diego Carlos suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon in their win over Everton and will now require surgery.

The 29-year-old has started both Premier League games of the new campaign under Steven Gerrard, but was forced off through injury during Saturday's home win over Everton.

A statement from Villa on the club's website has since confirmed the severity of the Brazilian's injury:
