Ronald Koeman has claimed James McCarthy should have taken responsibility for his injury that has led to him missing out on the Merseyside derby against Liverpool.
The Everton boss, who put on a pair of glasses before reading a pre-worded statement ahead of the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, also hit out at Martin O'Neill for neglecting to look after the midfielder's fitness.
Koeman said: 'The assessment of the Ireland medical team would be that it would be high risk for James to play. When asked to play he said he felt he was fit.
'In my opinion the Ireland manager in this instance was not protecting the player.
