EDMONTON — Nike did it. And so did the Edmonton Oilers.
But until recently, it was a little known fact that the Oilers had even registered the slogan Battle of Alberta to add to their library of intellectual properties — a library that includes: the Edmonton Oilers, the Edmonton Oil Kings and the Edmonton Capitals.
The Battle of Alberta has been on file with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office since 2002, which ultimately means that anyone looking to use the slogan for commercial use has to seek permission from the hockey club.
Turns out the Edmonton Rush didn’t, and according to a recent report, owner Bruce Urban was told that his National Lacrosse League team could not use the slogan to promote their games with the Calgary Roughnecks.
