EDMONTON — The Edmonton Oilers had The Great One, No. 99. Now, they’ll likely have The Next One, No. 97 — Connor McDavid.
Unbelievably, the Oilers drew the right numbers on the bingo balls Saturday and won the NHL lottery for a fourth time since 2010, and almost surely will call out the name of the Erie Otters centre McDavid at the NHL draft June 26 in Florida.
McDavid, who had 120 points in 47 games this season in Erie, in the Ontario Hockey League, has been described as the best talent to come into the draft since Sidney Crosby in 2005 when they had a lottery for all 30 teams.
